I Love Halloween!

I absolutely love this time of year! Halloween....All Saints Day....All Hallows Eve...Samhain...no matter what you call it, I adore this time of year. For me it is approximately 4 to 5 days of festivities and events. Last night was a Harvest Festival in a neighboring town. Tonight is a costume party/concert featuring one of my favorite local bands at a venue a friend of mine owns. It's going to be a blast. I can't wait! Tomorrow is the silent dinner and some other events. Then, another festival on Monday.

A silent dinner is done in honor of relatives or friends that have passed on.

Every year, I buy candy and put them in a large serving bowl for the kids coming around between 5 pm to 7 pm for Halloween. They used to be only kids, no older than ten and some as young as 3, living around the block. Being a bachelor alone and not into family, I do this as a social obligation. Of late (for the past 5 years), a lot of the kids trooping up my front steps (black and looked old enough to be shaving) were brought in from other neighborhoods by their parents in cars. I was torn between wanting to continue with the tradition for the sake of the kids living around me and stopping to prevent myself from getting ripped off by outsiders. My only recourse, for now, was to buy two kinds of candy that I would put into two separate bowls. When I see outsiders coming up my walk, I would offer them the cheapest crap in the “outsiders bowl”, and premium chocolates and gourmet cookies for kids around the block. Happy Halloween.
